The U23 team of Ahrweiler BC suffered their first loss of the young season on the 3rd matchday of the Kreisliga. Against SG Maifeld-Elztal, the team of head coach Ricardo Ribeiro and co-coach Tobias Roth lost 1-2 (1-1) on Sunday, thus dropping to seventh place in the standings. However, given the early lead, the courageous performance while shorthanded, and the late decision in favor of the visitors, earning a point would have been well deserved.
Dream start – then the damper
The ABC got off to a perfect start. The offense broke through early on the left side; Aron Seck only had to push the sharp cross over the line – 1-0 (4'). Shortly after, a 2-0 was even in the air when Faruk Tunc missed the certain goal from close range after Seck's setup.
The game was marked by many tackles, interruptions, and discussions from the start. After a confusing scene in the penalty area, Aron Seck got into a duel with the opposing goalkeeper and gave in to fouling. Referee Ingo Jakima rightfully and deservedly showed the red card (37'). Immediately afterward, Maifeld-Elztal scored the equalizer (38') through Yannik Schneider with a header from a cross.
Great morale with fewer players
From then on, the ABC U23 played with one man down, but defended with passion and looked for opportunities on the break. Especially in the second half, the team showed tactical discipline, fought selflessly, and created chances to win the game. The visitors struck again in stoppage time: a cross found Schneider again, who slotted home for the final score of 1-2 (90'+3).
Coaching team optimistic
"We deserved at least a draw, the guys put in a lot of effort," was the conclusion from the coaching team after the final whistle. Even though the streak of two opening wins has ended, the impression of a cohesive team performance that can be built upon prevailed. Especially the defensive play while shorthanded and the team spirit were encouraging.
Look ahead
The match was also accompanied by a lot of emotion on and off the field. The team saw the at times heated reactions of the U23 supporters as an indication to remain calmer and focus more on the football in the future. "We're taking the experience with us, it will help us for the upcoming games," was the unanimous opinion within the ABC camp.
Next Sunday, an demanding task awaits with the away match against SG Vinxtbachtal. With the displayed morale and the right attitude, the U23 wants to get back on track there.
