First, we must thank the organizer, FC Wegberg-Beeck, for a great tournament day with excellent organization. The F-Juniors of Ahrweiler BC, equally motivated and excited, stepped onto the (Wimbledon) grass last Sunday in their new jerseys from the "Ahrlotsen" to start the Basi Cup in Wegberg-Beeck. And the performance of the young footballers from the Ahrtal was impressive. In the group stage, they only had to yield to the eventual tournament winner, SG Wattenscheid 09, and confidently reached the round of 16. There, unfortunately, they came up short against JSV Baesweiler in a penalty shootout, meaning they would "only" compete for places 9-16. After two victories in the playoff mode against JSG Hellas Krefeld and SC Leverkusen, they faced SC Falke Bergrath in the "Little Final." And again, as in the round of 16, the decision was only made in a penalty shootout. Once again, the young ABClers were on the losing side and finished in tenth place overall among the 20 participants.
The coaches Darijo Matosevic and Lukas Gronwald were very pleased with the performance of their protégés: "In regular time, we only lost one of eight games. And that was against the later tournament winner from Wattenscheid." However, ABC was at the forefront when it came to goalkeepers. Julian Szudra was chosen as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
Tired, satisfied, and yet already looking forward to the upcoming tournaments, the district town footballers headed home.
