As part of our series introducing new junior players, today we're taking a look at a player who has quickly developed into a key performer: Jari Gronwald.
Having moved from SGL Heimersheim to Ahrweiler BC, the 16-year-old is an indispensable player in defensive midfield. With his enormous work rate, strong tackling, and clear understanding of the game, he impresses as a "vacuum cleaner" in front of the defense, providing stability in the center. His absence is immediately noticeable – a clear sign of his value to the team.
In the interview, Jari talks about why he loves this role, how he motivates himself on the field, and what goals he has set for the current season.
👉 How did you come to SGL Heimersheim back then – and what prompted you to switch to ABC?
I always had a ball at my feet since I was a little boy. My father registered me at SGL Heimersheim when I was four years old. After ten years there, I simply wanted to try something new - a new challenge. The move to ABC was exactly right.
In defensive midfield, you have to run an incredible amount – is working for the team the part you enjoy the most?
Definitely! I love winning important balls and rebuilding the game. The feeling when you help the team is just awesome.
They say you notice immediately when you're missing – how important is your role on the team to you?
That truly means a lot to me. I'm glad I was accepted so well right away and I can tell that I can help the team.
What qualities do you think make a truly good defensive midfielder?
Clearly: game overview, readiness to run and fight – and that you get involved at the front when it suits you.
Are there role models in professional soccer, on your position, that you particularly admire?
Yes, Eric Martel and Pedri – both play with incredible commitment and game intelligence.
How do you manage to run so much in every game – do you have special routines?
Actually, no. I just make sure to stay fit and always give it my all in training.
Who gives you the most support on your journey as a footballer?
Clearly: my teammates and the coaching staff. Without them, none of this would be possible.
With whom on the team do you have the best coordination on the field?
Things are working out really well with David Lorca and Luca Esper – we get along great off the pitch too.
Do you have a pre-game ritual?
Yes, I always listen to music, it puts me in the right mood.
What are your goals for this season – and what do you dream of for the future?
I want to develop personally and win the district league with the team. Long-term, it would be awesome to play in the first team, of course.
